Export Week - our top tips

To mark Export Week, here are 5 quick tips to help you make the best start possible with exporting:

1: Do your research – there are many ways to do research, from desk research on the internet, to actually visiting the country you are interested in. Take the time to choose your market carefully, and make sure you know your product or service will be well received there. UKTI can help with research, putting you in touch with people in your target market, arranging visits and helping you with trade fairs for example.

2: Don’t let the language be a barrier – there are lots of ways you can get help. Where it counts, for example in customer facing materials, contracts or insurance matters, use a professional translation company.  Where it’s not so important or for information only, use the skills of a colleague, or consider taking on a bi-lingual student to support your project if things can’t be done in English. Remember though that when someone wants to buy, they want to do it in their own language.

3: Make sure you are culturally aware: use bi-lingual business cards and know how to present them. Dress and act appropriately and know the customs and expectations of your target market. UKTI and others can offer help with awareness training – your translation company can easily arrange to translate and print bi-lingual business cards plus any other marketing materials that you may need.

4: Start small: Make your mistakes and find your feet with smaller orders. Your experience will grow as your orderbook does. Maybe consider an English speaking market first if you are new to export to help gain experience.

5: Be careful who you trust: Take time to find the right path to market – online sales, agent, distributor etc and make sure you thoroughly check out anyone you are going to partner with. Again your Chamber of Commerce or UKTI can help with finding the right people and setting up the links you will need. Talk to someone who has exported to your target market before – they may help you avoid the common pitfalls.

Look out for UKTI and Chamber events which are happening up and down the country – go along and be inspired. Talk to us on 0844 856 1086 if you need help with translation, from a website to a business card. We’d love to help you succeed!
