Here's Sue Clark presenting to Year 9 students at our local Haybridge Gifted & Talented Linguists conference a couple of weeks ago. Over 90 students attended the day from across 3 schools, and their interest and enthusiasm for languages was obvious.
Not everyone was aware of what a translator or interpreter might do on a daily basis, so Sue gave them an insight into this potentially fascinating career.
Activities included guessing the national anthem, identifying language samples, learninga how to introduce yourself in 4 new langauges including Russian and Welsh, and learning more about what activities a translator would be involved with. Sue was able to pique their interest with tales of working with Formula 1 teams, football squads, rescuing lost lorry drivers and translating adverts for TV.
Not all assignments were so glamourous however, and the students also got to grips with text samples of a more down to earth nature including technical texts and certificates.
Sue looks forward to continuing this work with local secondary schools when the next "Place in Europe Competition" needs to be judged in the Summer.
