All languages great and small

Unsurprisingly, a large proportion of the translation work MTT undertakes involves the big global languages of English (of course), Spanish, Arabic and Chinese alongside widely spoken European languages such as French, German and Italian.

However, we also translate in and out of smaller languages, especially European ones, such as Swedish, Croatian and Czech. Although these languages may have fewer speakers, they are still very robust in terms of language vitality and are considered equally ‘safe’.

Sadly, it is estimated that 40% of the world’s 7,000 languages are endangered. Here in the British Isles, UNESCO classifies the indigenous languages of Welsh and Scots as ‘potentially vulnerable’; Manx, Scottish Gaelic and Irish as ‘definitely endangered’; and Cornish, Ulster Scots (Ullans), British Sign Language (BSL) and Angloromani as ‘endangered/unsafe’.

At MTT, we regularly translate materials into Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic as well as providing BSL interpreting services. We are always willing to collaborate on ‘rare language’ projects and will do our best to locate specialist rare language linguists.
