More about Wales

Wales has a population of over 3 million people. The most populous and industrial areas are in South Wales including the cities of Cardiff, Swansea and Newport. As many people know from a holiday visit, Wales has a distinctive culture including its own language, customs, holidays and music.

The Welsh Language is an Indo-European language, and although most people living in Wales can speak English, the Welsh language (Cymraeg) continues to thrive. Over 20% of the population can speak Welsh and Welsh is a compulsory subject for all pupils to the age of 16 . The Welsh spoken today is directly descended from the language of the sixth century.

The turn of the 20th century saw lots of people coming into Wales to work in the new thriving industries. Wales’ industry has changed drastically over the last century. The emphasis used to be on coal, steel and slate and today alongside these heavy industries, tourism and the public services also play a major role.

Welsh translations today

Many of our Welsh translations are for community or governmental use. Here, as in all other areas, the use of a mother tongue translator is vital to ensure that the style and tone are appropriate for the reader. It’s often immediately obvious if a non-mother tongue translator has been used as the text may appear stilted and lose its flow. If you've got an important message to get across, you don't want the reader to be distracted by a less than perfect translation.

Who are our translators?

We've grown a large database of language experts over the years, covering all commercial languages and most minority languages too for a wide range of subjects. Most of these people we've known for a long time and we have developed a good working relationship with them - we're happy to trust them with documents we know will suit their skills and their experience. This gives a far better service to our clients than you'll find in some other places. Our Welsh translation team are mostly resident in Wales and work both into and from Welsh.

We're often asked why we don't recommend Google Translate - it's quick and easy of course, and fine for getting a quick gist of something short (or to find out which particular bit of a long document needs looking at more closely), but as most of the documents we handle have implications for safety, health, company revenue or reputation, it's not recommended for anything more.
