When preparing to translate a technical manual, it pays to remember the 3 Ds: Diagrams, Dials and Dialects.
1. Diagrams – is there any non-editable text contained within diagrams, graphs or images?
The best way to deal with text within diagrams and images is to provide an editable version so that the translator can overtype their translation, or add a numbered key alongside the image. Where this is not possible, we can supply the translation of these sections in a bilingual table format for ease of reference.
2. Dials – how to approach the text on machinery dials, buttons and software?
If the text on the machinery control panel or software screens will remain in the source language, then we usually propose the following approach: The original text is retained in the technical manual (i.e. POWER ON) and the translator provides a translation alongside so that the machine operative can understand the meaning. For second and subsequent instances within the same document, it may be deemed appropriate to only include the translation.
3. Dialects - is a specific regional dialect or language variety required?
Some languages vary quite significantly from country to country (such as European vs Brazilian Portuguese, or European vs Latin American Spanish). If you know which country your technical manual is going to be used in, please let us know as it will help us select the best linguist for the job.
