How long does a translation take?
Translation is often the final stage in the long process of technical writing and content creation, whether that’s publishing a website, press release, technical data sheet, user manual or clinical trial protocol.
The answer to ‘how long will it take’ varies, but here are some factors to take into consideration:
Document format
Complex document formats require more time if the same look and layout is to be maintained. Where documents include complex layouts including elements such as graphs, tables, diagrams, graphics and text boxes, extra time is needed to ensure the translation mirrors the source.
Language pair
Translation into some languages takes longer than others because of resourcing issues. Put simply, for some language pairs, the small number of available linguists are very busy people! When translating into multiple languages, allowing for split delivery, where completed language versions are ‘drip-fed’ back, can be a pragmatic approach.
Topic
Technical subject matter, including engineering, process, legal and scientific content usually takes longer because of the importance of research and terminology validation, making sure that every term is precise and accurate.
Proofreading and revision
Where documents are to be reviewed and revised by a second professional linguist, additional time is needed. We recommend proofreading by a second person (whether that’s one of our professional linguists or by your own in-house resource) for critical or external documents.
