Reasons why we love CAT tools
CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools help linguists produce translations that are more consistent, efficient, accurate and professional. What’s not to love!
They store previously translated segments (short phrases or sentences) in a Translation Memory (TM) and then suggest them when similar content appears. So rather than repeatedly translating a phrase like ‘visit our website for more information’ a CAT tool will remind linguists how it is has been translated previously.
For anyone who procures a large volume of translations or uses multiple linguists, a TM is an essential consistency tool, especially where there’s a high percentage of repeated text. The more text that is translated and imported into the TM, the more helpful and informative it becomes.
A large, well-managed TM is a very valuable asset! But don’t confuse CAT tools with machine translation. A human linguist uses their professional judgment and discretion when assessing previously translated segments to ensure they are suitable in the context of the project at hand.
