When translated text is being used in printed materials it will need to be typeset. And if the typesetter doesn’t speak the target language, it is difficult (if not impossible) to spot whether the text is being properly rendered.
The secret to trouble-free typesetting is maintaining linguist involvement throughout the process. By ensuring that translators and typesetters work closely together, common typesetting pitfalls can be avoided.
However multilingual typesetting has other challenges. Depending on the language pair, translated text can expand or contract by up to 35% which has a significant impact on page layouts, while languages which read right-to-left (such as Arabic and Hebrew) require layouts to be reversed. This is why ensuring that typesetters have the right software, skills and experience is essential.
