Why A to Z Isn’t Enough in Swedish
Did you know that the Swedish alphabet doesn’t end with the letter Z? In fact, there are three extra letters that come after Z, Å Ä and Ö.
These three extra letters shouldn’t be confused with accents or diacritics (such as French é and è). Although they may appear visually similar to English-speakers, Å Ä and Ö are classed as completely separate letters, not just variants of A and O.
For instance, you would find the French word ‘école’ (school) under E in the dictionary. However, the word ‘ödla’ (lizard) would be at the very back of a Swedish dictionary.
It’s an important distinction, especially if translating an index or glossary. And it’s one of the many reasons why at MTT we only work with native-speaker linguists.
