As Burns Night approaches, we’re reflecting on Scots, the language that Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns used in much of his poetry.
Modern Scots is an official language of Scotland, and in the 2022 census over 1.5 million people reported that they could speak Scots. Not to be confused with Scottish Gaelic (which is a Celtic language like Welsh, Irish and Cornish), Scots is a Germanic language and a ‘sibling’ to Modern English. Scots has its own distinct vocabulary, grammar and literature with over 60,000 unique words and expressions such as ‘dreich’ (dreary, gloomy), ‘braw’ (excellent, pleasant), and ‘peelie-wally’ (pale, off-colour).
