Localise or Globalize? World Englishes in Translation

It’s American Independence Day! A good day to be reminded that when translating a text into English you can choose to specify American English rather than British English. In fact, there are a great many ‘World Englishes’ and the variety you choose will depend upon your primary audience(s), as well as whether your aim is to ‘localise’ or ‘globalise’ your text.

The differences between varieties of English include more than just pronunciation and spelling (i.e. globalise / globalize). Variations in technical terminology, general vocabulary and idiomatic language (as well as cultural differences more broadly) are all important factors.

This 4th of July (or July 4th!), remember to specify if you require a variety of English other than ‘standard’ British.
