At MTT, we regularly translate food labels, and we understand how critically important it is to get them right. In the last month alone, we have translated food packaging into languages as diverse as Azerbaijani, Latvian and Uzbek!
To mark World Food Day on 16th October 2025, here are our top tips to translating food labels:
- Avoid machine-only translations. Allergen information, food safety and legal compliance are not the place to cut corners or take risks. It is always best to work with mother-tongue, technical linguists who are familiar with food regulations and terminology in the target market.
- Remember to localise. It’s important to adapt measurements and date formats for the local audience. This could be as simple using commas for decimal points or converting weights and measures from imperial to metric.
- Consistency is key. Consider using translation memories and glossaries to maintain consistency across products and over time.
