Did you know? – Turkish is one of the politest languages in the world

The Turkish language uses honorifics and grammatical forms that allow for very specific levels of formality, depending on age difference, levels of familiarity and social distance. These are used in both formal and informal situations. While some honorifics are the equivalent to “Mr” and “Mrs”, others can be translated as “teacher” and “expert”, allowing for more diversity in levels of formality.

While this may sound complicated for English speakers, where honorifics and levels of formality are less defined, you’ll be pleased to know that you probably already know some Turkish through loan words. For example, coffee, yoghurt and kayak all come to us from Turkish – worth bearing in mind if you’re trying to figure out breakfast on a kayaking adventure holiday 😊
