Getting over terminology stumbling blocks

One of our recent clients required their user manual translating into German, a request which sounded simple enough on the face of it. As is our usual policy at MTT, we selected a mother-tongue translator with an appropriate engineering background, expecting nothing out of the ordinary.

However, our translator soon let us know that to be able to translate the manual he would need more context to fully understand the rig that was being described. As he said, a picture or diagram would help greatly, just to give some visual indication into the setup that the manual was describing.

While the client didn’t have anything like this to help resolve the queries, we were lucky enough to arrange a visit to their factory so that the translator could see the equipment in person – a simple “aha” moment that made the entire user manual make sense.

Now our client’s translation project has been completed accurately, and our translator also has more expertise to bring to future projects they might require.
